Acne Inflammation Process

As seen on the image there are several inflammation stages. Inflammation is a long process.

From left to right:

  • “Accumulation of apithellal cells and keratin”
  • “Accumulation of shed keratin and sebum”
  • “Propionibacterium acnes proliferation” – Mild Inflammation
  • “Marked inflammation” – Scarring

Acne Hormonal Changes

Acne is one of the irksome diseases that people are facing today. From early adolescence to adulthood it affects a considerable amount of people who undergo hormonal changes. Due to the changes, these hormones are responsible for the secretion of excess sebum, an oily liquid that results in the formation of acne. No matter how protective we are, our upper skin epidermis is always exposed to various conditions. Our skin works constantly to keep it going. Due to too much exposure the skin has to work to maintain its condition, so at the end of the day it collects all the dead cells and these dead cells lie on the surface of the skin which is termed as corneocytes. Thus our skin totally acts as an armor protecting us from all the risky factors like sunlight, pollution, heat, rain etc. So this is a routine of dead cell removal and new cell production by the epidermis.

There are various supporting structures underneath the skin that helps it keep going. Structures like nerve-endings, blood vessels, sweat glands and oil glands serve to keep the skin in working condition. These tell the skin what to do and when to do. So all the day oxygen is taken and the waste products are eliminated through the sweat glands and through the follicles.

In due course of action, when something gets wrong, which means when there is a hormonal change there will be an excessive production of an oily liquid called sebum, thereby leading to blocks. When such blocks or plugged pores appear, the dead cell will not be properly eliminated and hence the dead cells start to accumulate on the upper surface of the skin leading to acne. At normal conditions, this cycle should happen without any problem.

Inflammatory response is the first step of defense

If there is any block, then it automatically leads to deposition of dead cells and bacteria starts to thrive on it and thereby it leads to the next stage called inflammation. This condition is an inflammatory state of the body due to sebum outbreaks. So before we head to a doctor, our internal system would have started to respond to the condition. The body would generate signals and call for the help of a protein and some specialized cells to repair the injured tissues. This state of action is called as the inflammatory response. Inflammation is the first form of defense action taken by the body against injury and infections.

However, there is a problem caused by inflammation, as it is like a double-edged sword, when it is not under control then it would fetch results that are far more harmful than the original problem, damaging the healthy tissues. So to avoid the condition it is the sole responsible of the immune system to maintain a balance in producing healthy tissues and destroying the bacteria. The process of defense against the foreign body with chemical packed weapons and specialized cells to quickly detect and destroy is called as an inflammatory action done by our body.
