Till now, the acai berry (present in the Amazon rainforest) was considered as the best super fruit in terms of antioxidant properties and health benefits. However, according to recent studies, maqui berry is slightly ahead of it’s competition. The following data will help you choose between the two berries.

About phytochemicals, ORAC and anthocyanin

Both, the acai and maqui berries have phytochemicals. Phytochemicals can be defined as non-nutritive chemicals present in plants that prevent diseases and also have protective properties. Generally, plants growing in harsh conditions produce those chemicals to protect themselves; some of them can be used by humans  to fight and prevent diseases.

Antioxidants are very important for our body as they reduce the occurrences of heart ailments and the risk of cancer. Antioxidants also destroy the free radicals in the body which are created by cell interactions.

The acai berry was considered as the best source for anthocyanin, however, but the maqui berry can top it.Also  the ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) value of the maqui berry is about 4-10 times higher. Thus, it gives maqui berries a little advantage over acai berries. And this is the reason why maqui berry has become so popular among many people. Everyone is just rushing to stores to buy the “Wonder Berry”.
